After several weeks of weak monsoon activity, Kerala is expected to receive widespread rainfall in the coming days. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has stated that monsoon conditions are likely to become more active across the state.
Kerala Rain Alert Until 28 July
The IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rainfall in several districts until Tuesday. On Saturday, the districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Kasaragod are expected to receive heavy rain and remain under a yellow alert.

Despite the expected increase in rainfall, Kerala has recorded a significant rainfall deficit this monsoon season. According to IMD data, the state has received 34% less rainfall than normal between June 1 and July 24. The situation is more serious in Wayanad and Idukki, where rainfall has been around 60% below normal during the same period.
The weather department has forecast that rain or thundershowers are likely to occur in most parts of Kerala until July 30. The active monsoon spell is expected to improve rainfall across the state and may help reduce the existing rainfall deficit. The IMD has also warned that one or two places in Kerala could experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds on Saturday. Wind speeds may reach 30 to 40 kmph during these thunderstorms.
Advisory for Kerala Residents
Residents have been advised to remain cautious, especially during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms. People should avoid staying in open areas during lightning, be careful while travelling, and follow weather updates issued by the IMD and local authorities.
With the monsoon becoming active once again, several districts may experience wet weather over the next few days. Authorities are monitoring the situation closely and have urged the public to take necessary precautions, particularly in areas that are vulnerable to waterlogging, strong winds or localised flooding.
