Raksha Bandhan is one of the most loved Hindu festivals, celebrating the special bond between brothers and sisters. The festival is observed on the full moon day, or Purnima, of the Hindu month of Shravan, and Raksha Bandhan will be celebrated on Friday, August 28.
Raksha Bandhan 2026: Significance & Rituals
The festival is traditionally marked by sisters tying a rakhi, a sacred thread, around their brothers' wrists. The rakhi symbolises love, affection and the promise of protection. In return, brothers give gifts to their sisters and promise to support and protect them. However, Raksha Bandhan is not only about the relationship between brothers and sisters. It also represents family love, care, respect, and emotional support.
On the day of the festival, families usually begin the celebrations by preparing a puja thali. It generally contains a rakhi, roli or kumkum, rice grains, sweets, a diya and other items used for the ceremony. The sister applies a tilak on her brother's forehead, performs an aarti before tying the rakhi on his wrist, and offers him sweets. The brother gives her a gift and seeks her blessings while promising to stand by her in difficult times.
Many families also visit relatives, prepare traditional food, and exchange sweets and gifts. Some people also observe a fast until the rakhi ceremony is completed.
